Ephesus and Sirince Village Tour itinerary

You will meet your guide in front of the Tourism Information Office, opposite the exit gate of Kuşadası Port. We will inform you of the guide's name and phone number. After the meeting, you will start your tour of Ephesus, which is 20 km away.

Ancient Ephesus is known as the best-preserved classical city of the Mediterranean and the second-largest city of the Roman Empire. As you walk through the marble streets adorned with statues and columns, you will get a sense of living history. We will enter through the Magnesia gate and explore the ruins of the ancient Roman capital, passing by the Odeon, the Celsus library, the Temple of Hadrian, the Trajan Fountain, and the Grand Theater, which has a capacity of 24,000 people. St. Paul is believed to have spoken to the Ephesians in this theatre.

After the tour, we will take a lunch break at a local restaurant.  Next, we will visit the House of the Virgin Mary, Artemis Temple, St John Church, and Sirince Village.

The House of the Virgin Mary: The House of the Virgin Mary is located on a hill of the Bulbul mountain, hidden among the green gardens. According to legend, the Virgin Mary came to Ephesus and spent the end of her life there, accompanied by St. John. In 1967, Pope Paul visited the site of the church's foundation and the last place where the Virgin Mary lived. He confirmed the authenticity of the legend and recognised this tiny house. Years later, Pope John Paul II declared the House of the Virgin Mary a refuge and a place of pilgrimage for Christians. It is also visited by Muslims who revere Mary as the mother of one of their prophets. Every year on 15 August, an event commemorates Mary's Assumption.

Temple of Artemis: The Temple of Artemis, known as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was located in a flat area of Ephesus. Centuries later, it became a swamp, and today only the foundations of this magnificent Hellenistic structure remain visible. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt in the second century but was later demolished by earthquakes and finally destroyed by the Goths. The most beautiful remains of this temple are now on display at the British Museum in London.

St. John Church:  St. John, believed to be an evangelist, spent the last years of his life around Ephesus and was buried on the southern slope of Selcuk’s Ayosolug Hill. After his death, a small chapel was built on his tomb. During the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinianus (527-565 AD), it was converted into a magnificent basilica. St. John, also known as the Apostle John, wrote the Fourth Gospel and Revelation.

Isabey Mosque: The Isa Bey Mosque is situated in the district of Selcuk in Izmir, between the Temple of Artemis and the Church of Saint-Jean. It was constructed by Aydinoglu Isa Bey in 1375 and designed by the architect Şamlı Ali. The mosque is considered one of the oldest and most renowned works of Turkish architectural history from the Anatolian Principal period.

Şirince Village, one of the fascinating corners of the Aegean Region, is a village 12 km away from the Selçuk district of Izmir. Famous for its old Greek houses, narrow streets, olive trees and orchards, this village is a point of peace where history and nature intertwine. Şirince hosts thousands of tourists every year with its history, delicious food, local fruit wines and cultural riches.

** The Ayasuluk Hill area is unique because the temples of three different religions are side by side.

The text below needs to be remembered: The first is the Temple of the Goddess Artemis, a site predating Jesus's time and significant to Gamanism. The second is the Saint John Church, one of the symbolic churches of Christianity. The third is the Isabey Mosque, a place of worship for Muslims. These three places of worship contribute to the region's mystical atmosphere.

Ephesus surroundings and Sirince Village

The ancient city of Ephesus was once the most important port city and trade centre of the ancient world, with a population of 250,000. Situated in the fertile plain of the Aegean region, the city was the religious centre of early Christianity. It is an important pilgrimage centre for Christians today, as the House of the Virgin Mary and St. John's tomb are located here. Ephesus has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2015, and the Temple of Artemis has been confirmed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. St. John, the apostle and patron of the Virgin Mary, built his church, which later developed as a basilica in Ephesus, serving as the head of the preceding 7 churches in Asia Minor. Another significant site is the house of the Virgin Mary, currently used as a chapel, located 5 km away from Ephesus. Christian authorities have blessed and approved it as a pilgrimage centre in Rome. Ephesus also played an essential role in expanding Christianity and is often referred to in the New Testament. Saint Paul, in particular, was crucial in spreading Christianity in Asia Minor and Greece.
After a busy day in Ephesus, you can relax while enjoying fruit wine in the garden of a house in Sirince village, which is famous for its natural beauty and fruit wines.
