The House of the Virgin Mary, which was entrusted to the apostle St. John at the crucifixion of Jesus, travelled a long way to reach the ancient borders of Ephesus and chose this hill to spend the rest of her life. This small chapel was recognised as a pilgrimage site by Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI at different times. The Christian community prays by attending the mass held every Sunday.
Ephesus is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ancient capital of Asia Minor is one of the best-preserved ancient Greek and Roman cities. It is home to the Temple of Hadrian, the marvellous Celsus Library, the Temple of Trajan, the Grand Theatre (25.000 seats), the Agora, the Gymnasium, and the Terrace House (entrance extra). While walking on the marble road, you will feel like a Roman nobleman.
The Ephesus Church in Revelation is the most important of the Seven Churches in Asia Minor (Anatolia) and became the head of the seven. The Loveless Church (Revelation 2: 1-7) The Gospel of John was thought to be written in Ephesus. Apostle Paul preached to the Ephesians and lived in Ephesus for three years, to be accepted as the developer of Christianity in Ephesus, and is considered to be the third most important city of Christianity after Jerusalem and Antioch.
We have a lunch break in a local restaurant and then visit the Temple of Artemis.
The Temple of Artemis is regarded as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was destroyed by strong earthquakes and remained underground. Today, only a few columns and the remains of the temple's foundations survive.
St. John Church: St. John's Basilica is on Selçuk Ayasuluk hill. St. John the Evangelist's tomb is in the middle of the church. A small chapel was first built over his grave in the 4th century.
